Seems like Frederic Mitterrand keeps getting support from those in high places. New to the list is Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, President Sarkozy’s wife:
While foreign observers scratch their heads in wonder at how Mr Mitterrand is still in office as culture minister, attention has turned to his friendship with France’s first lady.
“She has great power and influence,” said Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam, a senator in President Nicolas Sarkozy’s centre-right party. “It’s obvious she is defending Mitterrand. But it puts the president in a difficult situation. He is offending many of his supporters.”
I’m split on this.
Frederic Mitterrand did say “boys” when he talked about his sexual exploits in Thailand, and while this was all hashed out when his book was originally published in 2004, it reared it’s ugly head again when he came to the defense of Roman Polanski and his pending extradition to the United States for his 1970’s rape of a 13 year old girl.
When folk are questioning whether or not you diddled little boy prostitutes in a question known for its child prostitute/sex tourism problems it’s not smart to come to the defense of another child rapist.
This isn’t going away as the French people aren’t to happy that Frederic Mitterrand still has his job:
However the traditionally tolerant French public is ill at ease with the Mitterrand affair. Only a quarter of viewers found his prime time televised defence convincing last Thursday.
As Sarkozy’s numbers continue to drop, we will see how much long Frederic Mitterrand manages to hold onto his job.
